Dojo vs JQuery vs MooTools vs Prototype Performance Comparison

Framework, Web Client, Web Performance

As part of my Mootools lecture at Codecamp I showed a brief speed comparison between the most used Javascript Frameworks running in the major browsers. Now as the Mootools team has extended their performance test tool (slickspeed) it is time to revise my benchmarks and extend them over more browser/platforms.

Test results (Lower is better):

Why I don’t prefer Flash-based Web Mapping

Flash and Vector Graphic, Graphics, Web Client

I posted over on The Map Room about that I didn’t care for the Flash viewer for Yahoo! Maps and a poster asked me to elaborate. Since I’ve upgraded to Flash 8.0, it seems to respond much faster than it did before (when I was still using Flash 7), but that brings up my biggest issue to way I don’t like flash as a viewer. I’ve always liked Autodesk Mapguide as a web mapping tool, but its biggest drawback was that you needed a plugin to get it to work and even then that plugin only ran on Internet Explorer..

The PNG Transparency Trap

Graphics, Graphics Format, Web Client

Yesterday’s featured tutorial on Ajaxian.com was titled: Hacking transparent PNG support into IE6 with IE PNG Fix, CSS and jQuery by Brian Dillard.

I wonder how this tutorial got onto Ajaxian as the topic is so much out of date. Ajaxian has always been a place of inspiration and a pit stop for the latest and greatest in the world of JavaScript and the whole Web scene. I was a little put off by this tutorial, though out of curiosity took a dive in anyway.

..

In the spirit of progress enhancement, which they avidly promote, they should have ignored IE6 and gave those users square boxes! However, for this particular case we’re in luck as there is an alternative—convert those dreaded PNG32s into transparent PNG8s!

Smoothing out the Creases in Web Fonts

Designers often choose one of the core Web fonts for body text because they are widely available, but like all typefaces, they render differently on different operating systems.

Core Web Fonts

In August, 2007 Apple and Microsoft renewed the license for the core Web fonts. It was anticipated, but still, there was a collective sigh of relief that the fonts would still be common to all major operating systems.

Web browser

Web Client

A web browser is a software application which enables a user to display and interact with text, images, videos, music and other information typically located on a Web page at a website on the World Wide Web or a local area network. Text and images on a Web page can contain hyperlinks to other Web pages at the same or different website. Web browsers allow a user to quickly and easily access information provided on many Web pages at many websites by traversing these links. Web browsers format HTML information for display, so the appearance of a Web page may differ between browsers .

Some of the Web browsers available for personal computers include Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Opera in order of descending popularity (in November 2007).

Browser Vendors Pushing For HTML 5

Web Client, Web Standards

Mozilla, Opera and Apple have joined hands to propose W3C to accept HTML 5 (via Ajaxian). Not very surprising since WHATWG, the group working on X/HTML 5, was composed of these three. Consequentially Microsoft’s does not appear anywhere near that.

I think it is time for W3C to take some action. XHTML 2 has been in the works for quite some time and X/HTML 5 seems to ready now.
