Adobe Teams Up with Google and Yahoo for SWF SEO

Flash and Vector Graphic, Graphics, Promoting Website, SEO

Adobe announced that they’ve made a special version of the Flash Player available to Google and Yahoo that allows them to fully index rich Internet applications and other SWF content. The content in rich Internet applications is now available to Google, and that means that RIAs should be easier to find in Google. This is one of the main issues that people ask about when talking about rich Internet applications, so its great to see Google, Yahoo and Adobe working together to solve this problem.

..

Adobe has created a special Flash player for the search engines that acts like a virtual user going through each application. It actually goes through the runtime of each Flash application and translates it into something the search engines can understand..

Last time we touched on the definition of Web 2.0 and talked a little bit about the way it redefines our relationship to information. E-commerce and Web Business, Free for Web, Graphics, Make Money from Website, Web Articles for Dummies, Weblog (Blog), Wordpress Blog

A lot of new bloggers want to include advertising on their site, but find the idea of adding an advertisement to their sidebar daunting. If your blog runs on WordPress software, it’s a simple matter of using your text widgets to show ads. In this post, we’ll show you how.

..

Rather than change designs now, a simple approach is to use the standard WordPress Text Widget to show image ads. Once you have had experience with displaying ads, you can then decide whether it is worth changing your theme to accommodate the ads.

What is an ad?

When you sign up for ads, typically via an affiliate program, you will be provided with a username and password which will allow you to login and select the ads you wish to run on your blog.

..

How to put an image ad into a text widget

The simplest thing to do is to display one ad per text widget.

Within the Design - Widgets section of your WordPress Dashboard, add a new Text Widget.

Web-based animation, video and storytelling options grow

Graphics, Sound and speech, Video in Web

I continue to be a vocal advocate of web-based digital storytelling tools which primarily use still images and audio narration, like VoiceThread, but the growing availability of web-based video editing and animation creation environments may entice me to begin experimenting with web-based digital stories which go beyond narrated slideshows. One difficulty with all these websites is categorizing them to understand what functionalities they provide..

YouTube is currently the best-known video hosting website, but is just one of many. YouTube permits users to rate videos and comment on them, and contributors can add videos directly with their webcam or by uploading a previously created and edited video. To my knowledge, YouTube does not (yet anyway) permit online video editing. Users can reply or respond to videos submitted by others or videos they’ve previously submitted themselves, leading to hyperlinked, asynchronous, multi-node video conversations. Those are a lot of adjectives to get your head around when it comes to web videos! It’s amazing to realize these sorts of multimedia interactions have just become mainstream in the past couple of years..

Graphic File Formats

Graphics, Graphics Format, Web Articles for Dummies

There are dozens of graphic file formats—some are unique to particular programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator or Freehand. Others you may run into and might have to convert into a different format as not all programs will open all graphic file formats. For example, Photoshop can’t open WMF files and HyperStudio can’t open PNG files!

You need to understand some basic concepts and terminology about graphic files for digital imaging to make sense and to make good choices when you are working with images on a computer. You may want to refer to this at some time in the future.

..

GIF

Graphic Interchange Format was created by CompuServe in the 1980s. These files are extremely small due to a lossless compression scheme. Since they are a very old file format, they have a low bit depth, 8-bit, limiting them to 256 colors—this is often referred to as indexed color mode. One advantage of the GIF format is that one color can be transparent—allowing the background upon which the graphic is placed to show. That is one reason this format is one of the two most popular formats for the web..

Displaying High Resolution Images on the Web with Zoomifyer.

Django, Framework, Graphics, Web Performance

I’m working on the next post in my series exploring Django, social networking applications and related technologies and issues. That post is going to focus on basic user authentication and account management and take an introductory look at the django-registration contribution, and so, the post should also have more general applicability..

..

The basic Zoomify Image software works pretty solidly as it is, although it still has some notable shortcomings. Performance is still a major issue for multi-Gigabyte images, and of course, this software will always be somewhat slower and less scalable than the official Zoomify Inc. software, which is written in C. Using modern hardware with a lot of memory and using the most current version of Python are easy ways to squeeze out a little more performance. On the software side, I want to eventually add the ability to plug in third party image processing libraries, and in particular, I want to write a plugin that uses ImageMagick, which I believe may be a better fit for this software and increase its speed and ability to handle larger images.

Why I don’t prefer Flash-based Web Mapping

Flash and Vector Graphic, Graphics, Web Client

I posted over on The Map Room about that I didn’t care for the Flash viewer for Yahoo! Maps and a poster asked me to elaborate. Since I’ve upgraded to Flash 8.0, it seems to respond much faster than it did before (when I was still using Flash 7), but that brings up my biggest issue to way I don’t like flash as a viewer. I’ve always liked Autodesk Mapguide as a web mapping tool, but its biggest drawback was that you needed a plugin to get it to work and even then that plugin only ran on Internet Explorer..

The PNG Transparency Trap

Graphics, Graphics Format, Web Client

Yesterday’s featured tutorial on Ajaxian.com was titled: Hacking transparent PNG support into IE6 with IE PNG Fix, CSS and jQuery by Brian Dillard.

I wonder how this tutorial got onto Ajaxian as the topic is so much out of date. Ajaxian has always been a place of inspiration and a pit stop for the latest and greatest in the world of JavaScript and the whole Web scene. I was a little put off by this tutorial, though out of curiosity took a dive in anyway.

In the spirit of progress enhancement, which they avidly promote, they should have ignored IE6 and gave those users square boxes! However, for this particular case we’re in luck as there is an alternative—convert those dreaded PNG32s into transparent PNG8s!
