If you haven’t noticed, I just switched from Blogger to WordPress about a week ago. Both are excellent services however I do enjoy WordPress a lot more now that I am finally using it. Now let me break down what I’ve found.
..
Blogger
Blogger was a great, easy to set up service..
..
WordPress
WordPress is also pretty great. It does require a few extra steps to get started but everything is very well documented..

During the last few months we’ve had a lot of clients who are very technically knowledgeable and coming to us to find out more after picking up on the buzz around CMS systems and Drupal and Joomla in particular.
..
After talking and developing answers for several clients, we decided to put all we’d written into one document to help other people with this decision. This is not an Drupal vs Joomla discussion. Some disclaimers before we start:
- An open acknowledgement that each choice is appropriate for different sites. Sometimes we have to tell clients that neither will work for what they want.

Lately I’ve been performing lots of fresh system installs, a result of testing my Ubuntu respin. Restoring my personal data after such an install is simple enough, but having to reinstall my Apache, MySQL & PHP set-up requires a little more effort. So, for future reference I’ve decided to record the process. By following the instructions below I should be able to get my development server up and running within minutes.
AMP install instructions
1. Open a terminal and issue the following command to install the three main packages:
sudo apt-get install apache2 mysql-server php5
This will install the following packages:
apache2 apache2-mpm-prefork apache2-utils apache2.2-common libapache2-mod-php5

A lot of new bloggers want to include advertising on their site, but find the idea of adding an advertisement to their sidebar daunting. If your blog runs on WordPress software, it’s a simple matter of using your text widgets to show ads. In this post, we’ll show you how.
..
Rather than change designs now, a simple approach is to use the standard WordPress Text Widget to show image ads. Once you have had experience with displaying ads, you can then decide whether it is worth changing your theme to accommodate the ads.
What is an ad?
When you sign up for ads, typically via an affiliate program, you will be provided with a username and password which will allow you to login and select the ads you wish to run on your blog.
..
How to put an image ad into a text widget
The simplest thing to do is to display one ad per text widget.
Within the Design - Widgets section of your WordPress Dashboard, add a new Text Widget.
- Do not enter a title for the Text Widget (the single line edit box at the top).

MySQL Tools -
Apart from being a popular open source database. It also has some amazing tools, which have been formed, due to years of users invaluable feedback, on their forums. Here’s what the website describes about MySQL Administrator;
MySQL Administrator is a powerful visual administration console that enables you to easily administer your MySQL environment and gain significantly better visibility into how your databases are operating

MySQL and NetBeans -
So, you want to use MySQL with NetBeans, I guess Java is your language of choice for development in NetBeans, as it provides such a fabulous Java Editor since 6.0 FCS and now, its really amazing in 6.1 FCS. You could try making a database application using Swing Application Framework, which lets you create a CRUD application.
Firstly, you need a JDBC driver, as we are using Java to connect to MySQL databases, then you have to go for Connector/J (IV Type Driver), there are some more available for other languages too.

Free for Web, Tools
Protopage is usually promoted and thought of as a homepage service. That puts it in with providers like Netvibes, Webwag, Pageflakes, Yourminis, Google personalized pages, and Windows Live.
Part of my interest in Protopage was that it was one of the first sites that I saw that was using an Ajax desktop that lets you move items around on the page with a simple drag and drop. Others have that now too - Netvibes, Google, Microsoft Live and Zoozio. Goowy is similar but using Flash. Microsoft Live is the only one that is extensible allowing a number of widgets and tools to be added.
..
Protopage is actually more limited in design (most of us couldn’t handle the Ajax even if they gave us access to the code!) but offers more add-ons, so the results can look media rich.

Framework, Free for Web
I may be tied up (and very close to completing!) a lot of new work that sought me out in late February and has me working long hours without much time to maintain contact with the community, but it’s hard to miss the release of the Zend Framework 1.5!
Ever since I started tinkering with the Zend Framework back in 2006 I’ve pretty much converted to using it in preference to anything else. It’s approach in being a PHP5 decoupled component library set it apart so far from everything else in PHP and it was simply easier to work with when you could extend classes to introduce customised behaviour. Of course back then it was still a struggle to keep track of the shifting sands as features evolved, new ones were added, and the integrated whole slowly gained cohesion. More than one custom feature met its death as the features in subsequent versions built up.
..
There are a few strands existing to better the framework judging from the muted whispers infrequently found on the web.
1. Developer Tooling/Support
2. Supporting Emerging Technologies
3. Playing to PHP’s Strengths
All three to one degree or another are being worked on.

WordPress is very good about supporting standards and producing valid markup, and at least when I started using it, it had a link in the standard theme to proclaim the validity of its pages and prove it to you by taking you to the W3C Markup Validation Service. A lot of people never pay this any attention and promptly produce a bunch of non-complying pages, all the while shamefully leaving the boastful link in the sidebar or footer of their site.

WordPress XHTML Validator Plugin
I considered making a WordPress plugin to give me a button on the edit screen which would let me send the preview page source HTML directly to the W3C validator. Then I could perform a quick verification after composing a post..
