Domain
There was a time when the web wasn’t the only game in town. There were just as many Gopher, FTP and News (NNTP) sites as there were web sites. To distinguish web pages from other technologies, the familiar “www” was added as a prefix to the domain names.
..
It also means that most people by default start every web address with “www” even though we don’t necessarily have to. Today I told someone about my del.icio.us links and he typed
www.del
before I could stop him.
I am a big fan of shortcuts and typing
http://findlay.edu
instead of
http://www.findlay.edu
is a savings of four keystrokes.

I do not own too many .info domain names, but a couple of them that I do own have quite solid link profiles. In spite of this, on May 23rd all of my .info websites (including search-marketing.info) disappeared from Google’s search results. And then the next day it returned. It may have just been a ranking glitch, but many other webmasters had the same issue… their .info domain names simply disappeared from Google.
Why would such a thing happen?
- 2008 prediction from Matt Cutts “A top-level domain (TLD registry) will offer domains for under $4. The result will be another TLD blighted by spammy domain registrations.”

A couple days ago while I was at a conference news came about that Network Solutions was hijacking unused customer subdomains to post links to their other websites. It is getting really hard to trust *many* online service providers.
A big tip for new websites is to use the www subdomain and 301 the non www version to the www version, for 3 reasons;
- If some nefarious group tries to add subdomains to your site you can easily spot them with a Google search for site:mysite.com -site:www.mysite.com (you could subtract other subdomains if you liked as well, likeso)..

I have had my custom domain for a while now, however it is only recently that I figured out how to set up web forwarding so that anyone who types in mopedia.co.uk without the “www” will be forwarded to www.mopedia.co.uk. I am not the only one who has had difficulty doing this, Google groups is filled with people asking about web forwarding, most probably posted by me.

Every computer which is attached to the internet has an IP address. DNS is the process of relating a name to an IP address so that a website or other service can be accessed using an easily-remembered named (like ‘www.google.com’), rather than a number (like ‘192.168.0.1′).
..
However, most home users will be assigned a dynamic IP address that will change periodically, or each time they connect to the internet. In the past this made it very difficult to make a home computer accessible from the broader Internet. But with an increasing number of “Dynamic DNS” service providers, this is not such a problem.

Domain basics
A domain is simply the name you type into a web browser to access a website. The part of the name to the far right, for example .com, .org or .dk is known as the top level domain (TLD) while the part before that is the second level domain (SLD). So for bobpeers.com, .com is the TLD and bobpeers is the SLD.
..
Purchasing the domain
First you need to buy a domain name. These are very cheap these days but it depends on which TLD you wish to buy and where you get it from..
