Joomla and (or vs) Drupal - Which One is Right for You?

CMS, Drupal, Free for Web, Joomla and Mambo

During the last few months we’ve had a lot of clients who are very technically knowledgeable and coming to us to find out more after picking up on the buzz around CMS systems and Drupal and Joomla in particular.

..

After talking and developing answers for several clients, we decided to put all we’d written into one document to help other people with this decision. This is not an Drupal vs Joomla discussion. Some disclaimers before we start:

  • An open acknowledgement that each choice is appropriate for different sites. Sometimes we have to tell clients that neither will work for what they want.

Does Siteground Control Mambos Website?

CMS, Joomla and Mambo, Promoting Website, SEO

Mambo has been dying a slow death since the split from Joomla. In fact, the last time I visited their site was when they were forking again!

Its sad to see a once-great project in such a state. Several links on the homepage are broken, only three users were in the forum compared to over 800 in the Joomla forums and the “Download Mambo” didn’t work.

..

Even more shocking was that Siteground, whose antics we’ve covered here before, seem to have taken control of Mamboserver.com.

  • Siteground dominate the homepage. I know they need financial support but 4 of the 7 frontpage stories are advertisements for Siteground. Theres also an ad for FilesFrom.com, completely unrelated to Joomla, but run by Peter Lamont, former project leader.

Remove version number / name of extensions

Most vulnerabilities only occur in a specific release of a specific extension. Showing MyExtension version 2.14 is a really bad thing. You can modify this message to only the name of the extension by doing the following:

  1. Retrieve all files of the extension from your server.
  2. Open up Dreamweaver.
  3. Load any file from the extension that you just downloaded to your local machine.

Complex hierarchical taxonomies in drupal?

CMS, Drupal

I’ve been struggling with this problem for some time now, and am a bit stumped. Bits of it are trivial to solve, but when I start hooking things up, there’s a pretty big gap and disconnect.

..

The other thing I’m hitting my head against is the need to keep data entry as simple as possible. Some really nicely designed forms have been sketched out with ease of use as the primary concern. But they’re going to be pretty darned difficult to implement in Drupal without writing custom modules. If ease of use wasn’t such a big concern, I could probably just use text fields for display so I could enter whatever text I wanted to represent the degrees, and have a set of Taxonomy vocabularies to be used to represent the data for querying and filtering. But that’s redundant data entry, and would be very confusing to anyone actually entering the data.

Looking for help improving SEO on your Drupal site? There’s a great little module available called the SEO Checklist. It provides a list of the best SEO modules for Drupal and tells you if they’re installed. If you don’t, it will give you the link to download the extra modules and then a link to enable them.

We’ve already got a Joomla version of the prelaunch checklist (membership required). I wonder if it would be worth converting it into a component format?

Final SEO Whitepapers for Joomla 1.6

CMS, Joomla and Mambo, Promoting Website, SEO

Last month we mentioned that Joomla was asking for whitepapers suggesting improvements for Joomla 1.6. So we got together some smart folk and came up with some SEO proposals.
Thanks to everyone involved, and please head over to the Joomla forums to post your opinions about these various ideas.

1) Page Title and Site Name

Joomla currently arranges the page title as site name first and article name second. An option to toggle this option would be good, even the option to not display site name at all or use the Title Alias.

..

7) Numerical IDs in URLs

Neccesary for inclusion in Google News, the URL should be optionnaly prefixed with a numerical id, consisting of a creation date number, plus a unique id. Example : mysite.com/20080309/212/page-title.html. This URL should not vary when the page content is updated, to keep the url consistent.

Accessibility and Read More Links in Joomla

Accessibility, CMS, Joomla and Mambo

Clear and concise hypertext links are key to creating accessible website navigation.

But perhaps the most important issue for Joomla site administrators is ensuring that link text makes sense out of context.

Screen readers can create a list of all available links on a page to aid navigation, taken out of context a link such as “read more” makes little sense. To see this in action select “page info” from the Tools menu in firefox and then the links tab.

..

A simple solution is to follow the advice Barrie North gives in his blog:”I have always advised Joomla webmasters to to use a great mambot from Run Digital. It makes the read more link include the title of the article, great for SEO.
