Cakephp: isAjax weirdness

Ajax, Framework

Currently, I’m doing a project in CakePHP.

There’s lots to say about cake, here just a quick note, for myself or for anyone in case you are running into the same problem.

Situation: you are using the Ajax helper, which contains a method isAjax() - returns true if the request was an Ajax request.

Typically, you use this method inside a view, to conditionally render content for regular/ajax views. Example:

...
if (! $ajax->isAjax()) {
// render general page stuff
}
// render stuff for both regular- and ajax view
...

Ajax & Javascript

Ajax, Client-side Scripting, Custom Programming

When it comes to design of modern web-applications, Ajax is considered as a standard approach. Interactive solutions for lightboxes, form validation, navigation, search, tooltips and tables are developed using Ajax libraries and nifty Ajax scripts. Ajax is useful and powerful. However, when using Ajax, one should keep in mind its drawbacks in terms of usability and accessibility. With an extensive use of Ajax, you can easily confuse your visitors offering too much control and too many features.

An Accessible Slider
“Recently we designed and developed an interface that required a slider control, which allows users to choose one or a range of values on a continuum. Values on a slider can represent anything from hours on a clock to the volume on a music player to a complex, proprietary data set. In its simplest form, the slider is displayed as an axis of values with a handle to drag and select a value, or two handles for selecting a range.”

How to Make Your AJAX Applications Accessible - 40 Tutorials and Articles

Accessibility, Ajax

AJAX is a great tool for creating rich internet applications, however, when improperly implemented it can cause huge accessibility issues. The good news is that most of these issues can be fixed so your websites are viewable by a much wider audience. Great resources on accessibility have been around for years, however, many web 2.0 and AJAX websites ignore all of the research that went into turning website accessibility into a movement followed by most professional web developers. Below you’ll find a list of 40 best AJAX accessibility tutorials and articles that I have found on the web in the last year.

..

3 Myths of Ajax and Accessibility
I’ve seen quite a few ideas and bits of policy writing about accessiblity that could probably do with some updating. These are the 3 most common.

Accessibility of AJAX Applications
AJAX will not work in all web browsers. As its name suggests, AJAX requires JavaScript. This alone means that AJAX applications will not work in web browsers and devices that do not support JavaScript. For this reason it is not accessible to many typical Web users..

Decrease Load Time and Increase ROI in Web 2.0 and AJAX Sites

Ajax, Web 2.0, Web Performance

In this article I’ll be explaining the concept behind content encoding and discussing how this issue relates to web 2.0 web and AJAX sites. Next, I’ll be showing some examples of web 2.0 sites that are using this technology and those that are not. I will also do some simple tests with a few of the sites that are not currently using HTTP compression, to show what the benefits would be. Finally, I will give you all the resources you need to need to implement content encoding on your own website.

I was looking through some of my older posts tonight and realized my last post about AJAX galleries, slideshows and effects was from March 2006. Tonight I did a quick search through some of my sources to see what was new and exciting in the world of AJAX and Javascript image display and manipulation. Once again, below you’ll find a categorized list of all of the AJAX image solutions I’ve been able to find that were of some use.

Ajax: The future for Mobile Technology

Ajax, Mobile Web, Web based Application

The release of the iPhone in recent months and the release of it’s baby, the iPhone without a phone, crazed apple fans and even non-believers of Apple. Here we have something that’s really powerful compared to other available phones..

However, there were also curious developers who asked Apple what would be the next generation of platform for the new program that will run on their phones. Apple timidly answered, “Ajax is the development platform”.

..

We already have seen the power of Ajax on our computers and we can’t seem to get enough out of it. With Ajax, we experienced better interaction with our computer. Ajax tries to predict our thinking and of course it will reduce the need to have a higher internet connection since the power will be PC based. That notion is perfect for the mobile technology since it will eliminate the need of having a stronger internet connection..

Ajax Behaving Badly and Other Misconceptions

Ajax

An interesting discussion emerged today about whether Ajax and other Rich Internet Application Application (RIA) technologies like Flash and Flex, will end up overloading Web infrastructures in the future. Tim Bray has a very common sense explanation of the issues in his The Cost of Ajax piece today, the issue over which James Governer originally pointed to. I tend to side with Tim that the “Does Ajax hammer Web servers?” questions tend to be hand-wavers that don’t expose the real issues. I’ve talked about this in the past (The State of Ajax: Progress, Challenges, and Implications for SOAs) because being a good distributed services citizen is something all Ajax software designers will have to aspire to. Particularly as the entire Web is presently busy turning into a seaof reusable, open APIs, a growing trend that essentially turns the Web into our very own Global SOA.

Issues when developing AJAX Libraries

Ajax, Client-side Scripting, Custom Programming

This present articles does not present what AJAX is. You can find many articles on the web to present or how to use the technology. The aim of the articles is to present the different issues and solutions that you can have when you need to develop your own AJAX library or try to understand AJAX scripts. The article introduces different solution about the cross-browser instantiation of the XMLHttpRequest, how to handle responses and how to execute JavaScript sent in the response. It also presents non-obvious points about the object XMLHttpRequest.

..

AJAX nested into AJAX

If you need to create an XMLHttpRequest inside an XMLHttpRequest function, the reply will be lost because the variable referring to the XMLHttpRequest will be lost. The easy way to resolve this is to create in your library a function to store the XMLHttpRequest object. This function can be call in your embedded JavaScript.

var AJAX_Objects = new Array();
function registerAjaxObject(name, obj) {
AJAX_Objects[name] = obj;
}

Code in your embedded AJAX reply:
